According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Thailand is the “top destination for victims of human trafficking” and Bangkok is considered the hub of the international sex industry. Thailand and DC aren’t so different:
– both are capital cities with high numbers of international populations and tourists
– both have high numbers of human trafficking and exploitation, both labor and commercial sex .
Where do we fit in all of this? This short-term mission will have an anti-trafficking focus with two parts: 1) In Bangkok we will partner with local organizations (Dton Naam, MST Project, The Well), doing nightly outreach (simply talking with the women and men) in the various Red Light Districts and looking at the issue from both a supply and demand approach; 2) In the rural area of Issan we will continue to partner with Breakthrough Thailand in their prevention efforts and focus on prayer. Our goal for this mission is not only to engage with the issue of exploitation and trafficking in Thailand but also translate and apply what we will learn to serve our own community in DC. While this team is limited to ages 18+, we welcome all knowledge and skill levels ranging from individuals new to anti-trafficking to seasoned professionals!
