Today, nearly 2.5 billion people live on less than $2 a day. There are 1.2 billion adolescents in the world and 9 out of 10 live in developing countries. Nearly 19 percent or 1 out of 5 DC residents live under the poverty level. The faces of these statistics are parents struggling to provide basic needs for their children; able men and women without advanced education or jobs; underdeveloped economic capacity in communities; regions rich in resources and potential but crippled by poor infrastructure and ongoing conflict; families without adequate housing begging on the streets; and individuals stripped of all else resorting to destructive means of coping and survival. Poverty exists in a cycle that deteriorates community bonds, diminishes opportunities, and can descend to future generations if not imaginatively and effectively addressed. Jesus not only came to provide spiritual transformation, but physical and social as well. Training, resources, education, opportunities for empowerment, and encouragement for the impoverished are some of the oldest and most Biblical ways of serving in ministry. When the needs of the poor are recognized and addressed together in the context of community with the tools of thoughtful action and commitment, the impoverished have hope and a fighting chance at ending poverty.
