Three years ago we posed a simple question: What would happen if we took a one-sentence charge from Jesus and made that our mission? Undiluted. Unfiltered. Unbound.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
This one sentence moved us to start on a journey; a journey to build life-giving homes to orphans in Uganda and the Congo; a journey to struggle against injustice in Israel and Palestine through reconciliation; a journey to mentor kids in the correctional facilities of DC.
And that’s just the start. What started by being moved, has now translated into getting caught up in a movement that began with Jesus.
In the past 3 years…
* 450 have gone on short-term missions
* 1400 have served in local outreaches through Second Saturday
* 22 NCC’ers are now serving abroad
* 73 missionaries/organizations that are financially supported
* $1.8 million given to serve the poor and needy.
The aone:eight Movement. What is it?
Ordinary people, empowered by God’s Spirit, doing what Jesus did, together, wherever they are.
Serving is at the heart of a transformed, Christ-centered life. It’s about moving our resources and ourselves in response to human need, acknowledging that the worst kind of need is the kind that happens with nobody else around. In Jesus’ inaugural address in Luke 4:18-20, you’ll notice three aspects to His mission: spiritual, physical and social transformation. As a missional community, we’re called to respond to not just spiritual, but physical and social poverty, and within that framework several interests have emerged – initiatives that pulse with the people of NCC and that together we’re equipped to help address. Locally and globally, these are the places that our skills, experiences, resources, and our collective heartbeat meet.
In the aone:eight promo booklet and on this site, you’ll encounter local, domestic, and global opportunities to be the hands and feet of Christ to the hurting and the broken. We’d like you to prayerfully consider how you can boldly and courageously step up and serve. We believe spiritual growth happens when we transform our fears into faith!
You’ll notice each part of ACT asks the question: What else can we do? How can we facilitate the desires the Lord has placed in your life within Missions? We want to unleash the passions and knowledge within you!
May the Spirit guide you as you consider these opportunities and your involvement.
Straightforward. Simple. It’s not our idea. It’s God’s mission, it’s your mission. As you glance through the following pages, all we ask is that you consider taking one thing seriously: Jesus’ words. A1:8
